Hello,
My name is Annie and I have been teaching English in Thailand for the last 5 years. I am travelling up to Japan hopefully at the end of this month (April) or early May.
I am lucky that a Thai friend has offered me accomodation in Japan, but I really worry that it might take me some time to find a teaching position. Any advice?
I am also a 'young', intelligent and adventurous 52 year old woman and I worry that I might be discriminated against, because of my age.
Any advice?
Thank you,
Annie

Your teaching experience will help. But that said, age discrimination is legal in Japan. Jobs are posted based on age, the most common being "35 and under".

The sweet spot for teachers is a freshly minted, corn fed 21 year old Business Administration graduate from the American midwest - preferably blonde. They are guaranteed jobs, everyone else has to work for them.

Annie,

I wanna say as a Japanese, this is not a place to work as an English teacher. I totally agree with Joe. Plus, you can't teach as you want.
Just follow the rules, do as written in textbooks, that's it. Nothing fun, nothing attainable. Schools con people into studying there, teach nothing, and make them pay more. Hence, nobody can use English, but everyone has lots of excuses why they can't, like English is just a communication tool...whoa, it's the most important thing in our life!!!

Anyway, don't think of teaching here, or you'll be bummed.
